Mf Doom – “Coffin Nails”

Produced by Metal Fingers, this track came out in 2003 on the Special Herbs Volumes. It is an album of instrumental works released by Daniel Dumile, with each track named for an herb or herbal preparation. That is, all of the tracks with the exception of this one, Coffin Nails, which just so happens to be our favorite. Give it a listen and fulljoy your Saturday.

MillionYoung – “Cynthia”/SXSW

While wondering around SXSW on St. Patrick’s day last week, the universe led me to a bar named the Aquarium. Upon entering, I noticed that the place was packed to near maximum capacity… so I carved out a tiny space for myself in front of the stage. I couldn’t have made a better decision, as Millionyoung was already in middle set. I must admit, before this show, I was unfamiliar with their project, but now I must say that I am an all out convert! I love the simple melodies and happy chord progressions mixed atop what I guess you could call electro-pop. It’s been ages since I have chanted encore after seeing a  performance, but Millionyoung‘s magically passionate show was deserved of the crowd’s eager response for another round. Check out their single “Cynthia” off their latest release Replicants. Bless!

Here is some video footage from the show. As you can see, everyone was loving them, especially that long-dreaded Jamaican in the Newcastle jersey flailing his arms back and forth :)

Sebastian – “Embody”

Earlier this week, Sebastian released the video for Embody, the latest track from his long overdue debut album, Total. To create and capture the visuals, he enlisted the assistance of So Me, who is responsible for making videos for Duck Sauce’s “Barbara Streisand“, MGMT’s “It’s Working“, Kanye’s “Good Life“, and Justice’s “DVNO and D.A.N.C.E.” The video takes us on a stroll through life and shows us how music hits different people at different times in different places all at the SAME time. It’s brilliant.

In creation, Sebastian had this to say,”It’s important to take the audience on a journey. People want to dance and be removed from their daily duties.” So with that in mind, escape! You can pick up the Embody EP on March 28th.

Asa – “Fire on the mountain”

It seems like the perfect day for an Asa track. Asa (pronounced asha) is a Nigerian artist who was born in Paris but grew up in Lagos. Sometimes, her lyrics are unpretentiously didactic, like in Fire on the Mountain, but then, even those who don’t like ‘preachy’ songs will find her melody enchanting. Bless.

Asa – “Fire on the Mountain”

There is fire on the mountain and nobody seems to be on the run.
Oh there is fire on the mountain top and no one is a’ running.

I wake up in the morning – tell you what I see on my TV screen
I see the blood of an innocent child and everybody’s watching.

Now, I’m looking out my window and what do I see?
I see an army of a soldier man marching across the street, hey…

Hey Mr. soldier man, tomorrow is the day you go to war
Boy you are fighting for another man’s ’cause and you don’t even know him

What did they say to make you so blind to your conscience and reason?
Could it be love for your country or for the gun you use in killing?

So there is fire on the mountain and nobody seems to be on the run
Oh there is fire on the mountain top and no one is a’ running.

Hey, Mister Lover-man can I get a chance to talk to you?
’cause you are fooling with a dead man’s corpse and you don’t know what you do.

So you say you have a lover and you love her like no other
So you buy her a diamond that someone has died on
don’t you think there’s something wrong with this?

Tell me, who’s responsible for what we teach our children?
Is it the internet or the stars on television?
Why oh why? Why oh, why oh? Oh!

So little Lucy turns sixteen and like the movie she’s been seeing
she has a lover in her daddy – she can’t tell nobody till she makes the evening news.

For there is fire on the mountain and nobody seems to be on the run.
Oh there is fire on the mountain top and no one is a’ running. Oh yes.

One day the river will overflow and there’ll be nowhere for us to go
and we will run, run…wishing we had put out the fire, oh no…

For there is fire on the mountain and nobody seems to be on the run.
Oh there is fire on the mountain top and no one is a’ running. So yeah, yeah, yeah!

There is fire on the mountain, (fire in Africa) and nobody seems to be on the run (everywhere,in the city)
Oh there is fire on the mountain top and no-one is a’ running (no-one is a running)

There is fire on the mountain (fire, fire, fire) and nobody seems to be on the run….
